SPRING 2016 – Performing Arts Festival

Tribute to Prince on the Dom Tower

It was only a few months ago that I watched a full hour’s worth of Bowie music being played on the Dom Tower, but today already saw a new tribute. Purple Rain and 1999 were played on the bells of the tower honouring Prince. (more…)

Modern music on the Dom Tower – a tribute to David Bowie

The Dom Tower has been around for quite some time and often its bells play the kind of music one would expect of an old church tower.¬†Every fifteen minutes the carillon plays a standard melody. But on set days and times the carillon is played manually by the city carillon player Malgosia Fiebig. Every saturday she plays the carillon for an hour (11AM-12noon). And during summer she adds Friday afternoons to her schedule (12.30-13.30). Watch her complete schedule on the Dom tower’s site (in Dutch). This week Fiebig played the carillon on Monday as well and she played a tribute to David Bowie, whose death had been announced that day. Someone heard Space Oddity coming from the tower and filmed it, and that clip was viewed more than a million times on Youtube . (more…)

Find Your Way Out of an Escape Room

I quite like to solve riddles. If you do too, you might like to try one of the Escape Rooms in Utrecht. In December I went to Mysterium, which is located in one of the wharf cellars by the Oudegracht. Your team is locked into a room and you have 60 minutes to find the key to open the door again. To find it, you have to crack codes, find clues and solve puzzles. This escape room can be played if you don’t speak Dutch, although it’s probably wise to double check when you book. It’s tricky to say too much (because I don’t want to give away any spoilers – which is also why I used a photo from the canal outside the escape room). All I can say is that my team and I enjoyed ourselves tremendously and we managed to escape the room within 52 minutes:-) (more…)
